Field trips
Field trips are an integral part of many classes. Each program takes
regular trips during the day to enrich the curriculum and take advantage
of the wonderful resources that are available at Indiana University
and in and around Bloomington. Teachers see the community as a big part
of the classroom. When high school students were studying issues of
poverty as part of their service learning class, they went out on the
street and asked people they met, What does it mean to be poor?
When students are studying birds, they go out to wooded areas and watch
birds to see how they behave and listen to their songs. During their
Mysteries Theme the early childhood students went on a snapshot scavenger
hunt around the neighborhood and solved a riddle at Cascades Park when
they discovered the waterfall.
Other trips that were enjoyed by Harmony students
during the 2001-2002 school year were:
- Cedar Bluffs for a biology field trip
- Muscatatuck River
- Jeff Hartenfelds flower farm
- Linda Lewis country home for a hay ride
and picnic

Thursday afternoon Creation classes often provide opportunities
to get out into the community too. During Multicultural month the Korean
class visited the Korean grocery, Saraga Oriental Market and the Korean
restaurant, Seoul Garden. A geology class visited local rock outcrops
and the Indiana Geological survey. There was also Frisbee at the park
and bowling and pool at the Indiana University Union Building. The service
learning Issues of Poverty class spent a lot of time helping to build
a Habitat for Humanity house and volunteering at the Shalom Center.
