Families and Friends of Harmony 5th & 6th Grade,
What a lovely year we enjoyed in the 5th & 6th grade! Camping, socializing, hiking, swimming, and, of course, eating at McCormick’s Creek State Park, playing in the creeks around town, water quality testing field trips, orienteering, picnicking as a class and again with the whole school at Bryan Park, visiting the Eiteljorg Museum, watching Indianapolis Indians baseball, Spring Mill State Park, Big Splash, along with many other activities and field trips enriched and enlivened our academic curriculum. We explored the anatomy and physiology of the brain and connected our study of the brain to mindfulness training, mindful breathing, conflict resolution, building healthy relationships, digital literacy and safety, and human sexuality. We closely examined real brains and hosted a panorama of generous and fascinating guests in preparation for our Brain Museum at the Open House, complete with student exhibits on their independent inquiry projects related to the brain and real brains and a brain expert at the exhibit. This year we studied with a local expert naturalist, both in the classroom and in the field over the course of several months and also conducted related science experiments in the classroom. Some of us were in a play, others in an a capella singing group, and still others participated in the Holiday Follies. These and many more activities and themes filled our busy days. We capped off our year with graduation presentations, acknowledgements of our qualities of character, and our spring trip with swimming and high ropes course at Camp Palawopec in Brown County. Graduation was truly a celebratory event at the end of it all. We feel content and fulfilled as teachers, inspired to begin brainstorming ideas for next year.
Until next fall, please know the 5th & 6th grade sends you best wishes of good health, relaxation, and happiness for the summer.
In Peace,
–Kathy and Zevon and the 5th & 6th Grade
