The Latest from the ECP:

April 12, 2013

We’ve been gearing up for Art Day in the ECP. The Kindergarteners have been attending art themed creation classes all month, and the preschoolers have been creating their own art for the upcoming show, collaborating in small groups on large scale spin art paintings. We used an old window fan, a turntable, and a power drill embedded in a large wood frame as our spinning machines. We used recycled pizza boxes, thin metal sheets, stretched canvas, and other found objects as our canvases. The kids gathered around the spinning machines and squeezed bottles of acrylic and tempera paints with delight. As the canvas rotates, centrifugal forces draw the wet paint outwards, creating intricate and surprising designs. We’ve sure had a lot of fun with it!
The kids are also been very excited about our new incubator and chick eggs donated by Mary Helen. Each day we open a plastic egg at meeting that has a picture showing the stage of growth for that day. After 21 days we should have a whole bunch of baby chicks hatching. We’ve read some books about the life cycle of a chick and we’ve been singing the Spanish song “Los Pollitos” during family meetings.
Spring has arrived and we have been planting lots of seeds, both indoors and out. Christy planted lettuce and cosmos with the kids in our little playground garden plot. We’ve also started marigolds, squash, and more inside. We’re really excited to continue our gardening activities throughout the summer.
