Sal:
I am so proud of all my students this semester – they have been doing some exceptional work. In Western Civ, for instance, their presentations on Roman Food, Roman Life and Roman Entertainments were among the richest and most well-informed in recent memory. Currently, we are studying the Fall of Rome and will finish the semester with an introduction to the Dark Ages.
In The American Century, we have moved on to FDR and the New Deal. Students are putting together presentations on the WPA, NRA and TVA. We will then look abroad to the rise of extremes in Europe and the circumstances that spawned the likes of Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini, in preparation for the start of next semester, when we will analyze the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party.

Unfortunately, the History of Food class comes to an end this month, but we are going out in fine style with a Holiday Feast at which students will present a traditional dish from one of the cultures or countries in their heritage. So far, offerings include a British plum pudding; a French Buche de Noel; a German Stollen; Scottish shortbread; an Irish potato and cheese casserole; Polish Pierogi and American Egg Nog. The students historic recipe collections will be on display at History Night in the spring.
