Kathy & Scott’s Class

May 11, 2012

KATHY & SCOTT’s (10-12 year olds)

Spring is an exciting time in the 5th and 6th grade classroom. Our sixth graders are adding the finishing touches to their Graduation Projects as their fifth grade partners are completing their second research papers. Before long, both will be preparing for Graduation Presentations during the first week of May.

Our Early Field Experience teacher Abi, is completing her time working in our classroom. The students have been involved in a group research project investigating how maps have changed over time. They gave presentations of their work to their classmates during the week of April 9th-13th. Once Abi completes her unit, we will take the last couple of weeks of class to explore the vast universe of Astronomy before we begin Graduation Presentations. We are reading Arthur C. Clarke’s ―2001: A Space Odyssey‖ for our read-a-loud this month.

During the afternoons this month, we are continuing with Life Skills and Human Sexuality curriculum. We have the privilege of having Shelia Evans join us for sharing her expertise as the Program Manager for Community Health from Indiana University Health. This is a critical age for sharing information and experiences related to both of these topics. We have had some great conversations about decision making and consequences of the choices we make. The class has several activities lined up from late April through the end of the school year. Thursday, April 26th we will participate in the annual ―Soccer Challenge‖ versus the Middle School. The game will take place at Karst Farm Park from 1:15-2:30 pm. The team has been working hard at improving their skills and play. Come cheer on K&S, we need all the support we can get!

We will be taking a trip to the Indiana Reparatory Theater on Friday, April 27th to see ―The Miracle Worker‖. We read the book during class earlier in the year and look forward to seeing the theatrical production. The next field trip we will take is on Thursday, May 10th when we visit Victory Field to watch the Indianapolis Indians play baseball. We will be walking to the Buskirk Chumley Theater on Thursday, May 17th for a production of ―Big River‖ by the Cardinal Stage Company. This is a musical based on ―The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn‖ that we read during class earlier in the year. We look forward to seeing you at Parent/Student/Teacher conferences on Monday and Tuesday, May 14th and 15th. Take care and enjoy this beautiful spring weather.
